Biography
Mezzo-Soprano, Savanity Davis, is completed her senior year with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, concentration in voice from Rochester, New York. Savanity has studied voice at Mercyhurst College with Louisa Jonason. Through out her studies in voice performance, Savanity has performed in various performances with D’Angelo School of Music’s Concert Choir and Carpe Diem, under the direction of Rebecca Ryan, where she performed solo selections from: The Messiah (“Behold A Virgin Shall Conceive” and “O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion“), and the Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio (No.3 Air for Mezzo and No.2 Recit. and Chorus). Her performances also includes operas: Magic Flute(Third Lady), License to Marry, and Mikato. She has also performed selections, “Fever” and “Summertime” for the Mercyhurst Jazz Band Valentines Day Concert. For the past two years, in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Savanity has been asked to perform the “Negro Anthem” at the breakfast celebration for Dr. King, hosted by Diversity 101. In 2006, Savanity was recognized as a finalists for Erie Idol. Recently, Savanity, with the help of Martin Bliley, has just recorded a song for film director and child psychologist Jeff Natalie, for ErieKids Company, which will be debuted in Jeff Natalie’s upcoming film. Upon graduating Savanity Davis plans to continue her studies with Louisa Jonason for one year in preparation for graduate school in New York City. Recently in honor of Black History Month, Savanity has premiered the first African-American composer and poet recital at Mercyhurst College entitled, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.” During her recital she premiered Stephen Collanti’s arrangement of “If There Be Sorrow.” She hopes to be able to continue performing her recital “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” throughout the Erie School Districts, along with various other school districts throughout the nation. Savanity has had the opportunity to premier two Harry T. Burliegh arrangements, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Go Down Moses” with the YADO orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Frank Collura. Recently, Savanity gave a second senior recital in which she performed Italian, French, German, and famous English selections, such as “He Was Despised” from Handel’s Messiah.
